ABOUT ME

ABOUT ME

I was that kid who grew up loving puzzles, especially jigsaw puzzles. What fascinated me about puzzles was that every piece to solve it is right in front of you, in your control. The pieces are messy and have no obvious connection to the whole. But the more pieces you connect, the more the big picture emerges. Whether you start with the frame or focus on the subject, with time and tenacity, the puzzle starts to fall into place.

When we feel stuck in our relationships, work, friendships, activities, it can feel like we are perpetually working on that one section of the puzzle, trying to make that middle piece fit into the edge. The color and size of the pieces seem like they should click, but they just don't. My expertise is in helping you put together your own puzzle, and discover how your pieces fit to reveal your own big picture.

By the time we are adolescents and adults, we have developed a way of making sense of the world (which is a puzzle in itself) usually without realizing how the patterns of behaviors and decisions that served us as children are now hindering us. Together we will explore patterns of behaviors, relationships, feelings that lead to frustration and self-sabotaging behaviors.

Although I'm nice, and you will most likely enjoy aspects of your therapy journey, my job is not to be your friend. I am trained to listen to your story on multiple levels at once. Communication is not just words, but a whole range of ways of expressing. I'll ask you questions that may seem out of the blue (trust me, they're not), or observe something unexpected. I am here to help you be seen in the world as your most authentic self.

I began my career as a journalist, a crash course in finding out what makes people tick and how they navigate their daily lives. My passion for hearing people's personal stories led me to pursue a career as a psychologist. Being a therapist has given me the opportunity to listen and connect with clients in all phases of their journeys, from adolescents to seniors.

I am trained in a range of therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral, Trauma-Informed, Dialectical Behavioral therapies, but do not use a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment. I work with clients on challenges related to depression, anxiety, loss, adjustment, life changes, trauma, family dynamics.

When we work together, you will not only be listened to, you will be heard. Really heard.

Thank you for taking the time to explore my site. If you are here, perhaps you have experienced a loss, setback or change in life that feels overwhelming. Maybe you have reached a point in your life where you are stuck, just going through the motions, feeling disconnected from people and activities in your life. I look forward to meeting you and helping you put the pieces of your puzzle into place.

WHAT TO EXPECT

WHAT TO EXPECT

Whether you have been in therapy before, or are brand new to the process, therapy is by nature a very personal experience. Therefore, working with a therapist is first and foremost about "fit": finding someone you feel comfortable with, but also someone who you feel comfortable being, well, uncomfortable with. Therapy can be life-changing in so many positive ways, but there are times it may be awkward, frustrating, painful. It is in the moments where we struggle to communicate that we learn so much about what prevents us from having satisfying communications and relationships. I will gently, and sometimes with an attempt at humor, help you understand what blocks you from feeling you are being heard in other parts of your life.

Some of you may be looking for a therapist who specializes in a particular "type" of therapy. All therapists have been to graduate school and have studied different therapeutic theories, such as CBT, DBT, Psychodynamic, Behavioral, Rogerian, Systems, Family, Trauma-Focused, Structural, Gestalt, Psychoanalytic. So many brilliant researchers have laid the groundwork for clinicians to be able to understand clients’ challenges on many different levels. I don’t think I’ve encountered many psychological theories that didn’t resonate in some way with the way I work with clients. However, my years of working with real life clients taught me there is no one approach that is a slam dunk most people. I may occasionally refer to a theory to highlight something we are working on, but mostly I bring myself with my years of education and experience to work with you as a person, not as a diagnosis or checklist of symptoms.

Prior to each appointment, you will receive a link (via text or email, whichever you prefer) to our private session. There is no commute or parking to contend with, you can be wherever works best for you. Every session is different, but typically we will focus on whatever you choose. Therapy is your time to take care you what you want to. Most of us have too few opportunities to tend to ourselves and our needs. You may have something that has been bothering you, a follow up to what we had talked about before, something that you experienced at work, home, with friends. Maybe even a dream. Or maybe your mind is blank. These are all excellent places to start. Because the important way therapy differs from chatting with a friend, is that I am trained to listen to more than just words, to find patterns and understanding in your communication beyond the words. No matter what the actual topic is, my training and experience have taught me how to understand your story through many senses: your choice of words, your mood while talking about issues, your body language and facial expressions, your descriptions of joys, sorrow, frustration… You will be heard and understood for yourself, not just as a reflection of your family, job, community. By being able to explore and understand who we really are opens the door to more love and fulfillment.
